Victoria Cross Metro, North Sydney: Lendlease 42-storey office tower approved

Plans for a ‘landmark’ 42-storey skyscraper above a Sydney Metro station have been approved by the NSW Government. SEE WHERE IT WILL BE BUILT HERE.

A massive $1.2 billion, 42-storey skyscraper will be built over a soon-to-be-completed Sydney Metro station, following a NSW planning department approval today. 

Developer Lendlease’s plans for a landmark office tower above the Victoria Cross Metro Station in North Sydney is first major project approved in Tranche Three of the State Government’s fast-tracked development scheme — featuring a new community hub, retail, dining and more than 1000sq m of public space below the towering office block.

“The integrated station development at the new Victoria Cross Metro Station will double the available public open space near the tower and create a continuous ‘civic green spine’ along Miller St, with landscaped terraces, outdoor dining, casual seating areas and pedestrian paths,” Planning Minister Rob Stokes said following the announcement.

“North Sydney is already a strong commercial hub for Greater Sydney and this project will provide a much-needed boost, injecting $315 million into the economy and creating between 400-600 construction jobs to deliver the over station development.”

Lendlease managing director Matthew Mears said the approval was a major milestone for the development.

“Now more than ever it’s vital we continue to deliver projects that create employment opportunities and contribute to rebuilding the economy,” he said.

A planner for the billion dollar development said the proposal would generate “significant employment growth within the North Sydney CBD”. 

“The proposal also includes ‘The Hub’ at Level 2 of the commercial tower for a multi-purpose area envisioned to be a publicly accessible space utilised for community uses, meetings, events, and as a workspace orexhibition space,” the planner said.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the tower would accommodate more than 4000 employees above the Victoria Cross Metro station, revealing the development would be completed by 2024. 

Fit out of the Metro Station will start early next year.
