One of the most complained-about issues in suburbia — trailer parking — is to receive its toughest restrictions yet: a complete ban in the most-affected streets.

North Sydney Council will trial banning trailer parking in four streets later this year: Montpelier St at Neutral Bay, Fifth Ave and Montague St at Cremorne, and Brothers Ave at Cammeray.

There were 13 trailers parked in Montpelier St throughout February, according to a council report.

The North Sydney decision follows a successful six month trial on the northern beaches last year.

“No parking — motor vehicles excepted” signs were installed in 11 peninsula streets to prevent trailers. Complaints decreased by almost 50 per cent.

North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson said she frequently fielded trailer parking complaints and wanted North Sydney to run its own trial.

“Don’t buy a boat unless you’ve got somewhere to put it,” she said.

In addition to occupying parking space, boats could obstruct the views of pedestrians and motorists, she said.

The trial will run for three months before staff and councillors review its effects.

Residents will be invited to give feedback during the trial.

Dates have yet to be set.

While parking restrictions sometimes prompt motorists to simply move to neighbouring streets, Cr Gibson stressed this was a trial.

She said if it was successful, the restrictions could be imposed at other streets.

Owners of boat trailers have been limited to 28 days’ street parking since the state government in 2016 updated the Impounding Act (1993) to discourage long term parking.

Residents continued to report trailers occupying valuable parking space, however.

Councils including North Sydney and the Northern Beaches organisation have only recently sought to use the “No parking — motor vehicles excepted” signs.

Roads and Maritime Services introduced the signs in 2016.
