A thief enjoyed an online shopping spree and free train rides after stealing from sick patients and staff at Royal North Shore Hospital on Australia Day, police said.

A thief went on a shopping spree after stealing from sick people at a Sydney hospital, police said.
Handbags and wallets were taken from patients’ rooms and staff areas at Royal North Shore Hospital on Australia Day.
Stolen credit cards were allegedly used later for online purchases and in retail outlets, while one victim’s Opal card was used to travel on trains in Sydney.
Hospital security staff have been working with police after the thefts and support has been provided to those affected.
“It is very disappointing that someone would take advantage of patients and the people who help them,” a spokesman said.
“Hospitals are busy places and our security staff are on hand to support patients, visitors and staff.
“People are encouraged to keep personal possessions secure.”
Police have received four reports of theft and a wallet has been recovered with cash missing. One theft was recorded on security camera and the offender is described as male with fair hair, wearing thongs and carrying a backpack.
