LIONS will return to Taronga Zoo as part of its $186 million 10-year redevelopment of the Mosman site.
New or updated facilities and visitor experiences on the way include the $44.5 million Australia Habitat and Taronga Wildlife Retreat and the $30.7 million Taronga Institute of Science and Learning.
Taronga previously had lions in December 2015. The African Lion family was relocated to Hunter Valley Zoo because of the construction of Taronga’s new Sumatran Tiger exhibit, Tiger Trek.
Lions will feature in Taronga’s proposed African Savannah exhibit, but the zoo has not yet confirmed from where the lions will come.
Taronga will host a community information session about its proposed African Savannah and Congo Forest exhibits on Wednesday, May 10.
The exhibits are worth $49.9 million and are the subject of a state significant development application which Taronga is drafting.
A Taronga spokesman said the proposed redevelopments were two renewed wildlife exhibits which were part of Taronga’s 10-year plan to build a better zoo.
“These will form a new African precinct at Taronga Zoo that brings together animals from the same geographic area,” he said.
“They will be constructed in two stages: the African Savannah during 2017 to 2019 and the Congo Forest will follow afterwards.
“The African Savannah and Congo Forest exhibits align closely with Taronga’s strategic goals: the continuous improvement of animal welfare, enhancing the Taronga experience for guests and creating tangible conservation outcomes.
“Included in these exhibits is the redevelopment of our giraffe and gorilla exhibits as well as the return of lions to Taronga Zoo.
“As with all developments, Taronga is undertaking extensive stakeholder engagement and consultation with the community.
“The information session Taronga is holding at the zoo will provide the community with an opportunity to meet the team, learn about the project and ask questions about the redevelopment of these exhibits.”
The information session is at Taronga between 6pm and 7.30pm. Call 9978 4714 for more information.
