NSW Government officials have handed a $476 million contract to property group Lendlease to build North Sydney’s second train station.

The property group will build the underground Victoria Cross station, to be part of the Sydney Metro network, and 40-storey tower above.

Commuters will be able to travel from Victoria Cross to Central in nine minutes, according to the government.

Tunnelling machines are excavating the site, below Miller St and just north of the Pacific Highway.

The tower will be a commercial one with offices and shops.

The area around the station will also be improved.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the project would provide new employment and business opportunities, improved pedestrian connections and high quality outdoor spaces.

The station and tower will be built simultaneously due to the former being underground, according to Mr Constance.

A spokeswoman for Lendlease said it would lodge its development application in May.

Sydney Business Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe said the project would act as a catalyst for business to invest in North Sydney.

The first stage of the Sydney Metro — the northwest line linking Chatswood and Rouse Hill — will open in the first half of next year.

Victoria Cross will be part of the second stage — the city and southwest.

An underground, 15km route is being dug between Chatswood and Sydenham.

There will be new stations at Crows Nest, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo.

From Sydenham, metro trains will continue to Bankstown.

The project is due to be completed in 2024.
