EXCLUSIVE: The future of Crows Nest has been revealed.
The Sydney Metro is set to change the landscape of the suburb and four buildings are being proposed for the airspace above the station. `
Newly-released concept plans include two residential buildings, a commercial building and potentially a hotel.
Sydney Metro said it has investigated a number of height options for the site and is committed to protecting the “local village feel” of the area.
“The new buildings will integrate with the community structure, while recognising the changing look of this vibrant area,” a Metro spokeswoman said.
“They will also boost employment, supporting the night-time economy in the area.”
The residential towers would be 27 storeys with up to 350 new homes. The commercial building is planned to have eight storeys while the hotel would be 17 storeys.
A strip of shops, including several furniture outlets, were knocked down to make way for the Metro and excavation works have started on the Pacific Hwy site.
Sydney Metro said work on the design can begin while the station construction is in progress.
The new station will be about 25 metres below ground level.
Passengers will be able to travel to Martin Place in seven minutes from Crows Nest when the station opens in 2024.
North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson said she would lobby for community infrastructure within the new building complex.
“I believe a hotel would bring huge economic benefits to Crows Nest village,” Cr Gibson said.
“There is a high demand for more residential development in Crows Nest and it’s a highly sought after location.
“It will be a wonderful mix of contemporary and historic architecture.”
The busy hub of St Leonards and Crows Nest is currently undergoing a transformation.
Several sites are earmarked for major developments with hundreds of new apartments hitting the market.
One of the projects is called St Leonards Square and it will have 527 apartments spread across two towers.
The community is being asked to have its say on the planned Metro buildings with information sessions being held throughout the month at the Northside Conference Centre on Oxley St.
The information sessions are being held at on Monday 9 July 2018, 4-7pm, Wednesday 11 July 2018, 4-7pm, Saturday 21 July 2018, 10am-1pm and Monday 23 July 2018, 4-7pm.
