Ethan Scott-Branagan was only three when he played bowls for the first time which goes some way to explaining why he is now competing against men up to five times his age.
The 14-year-old (pictured left) will be the youngest competitor in the upcoming NSW championships.
He is representing the Belrose Bowling Club in the Pairs competition with 54-year-old partner Stuart Riggs.
And while decades separate the pair, the teenagers said they are a perfect fit when it comes to bowls.
“We just get on,’’ Scott-Branagan said.
“We laugh a lot. And he’ll keep me calm if I get nervous.”
The teen bowler said he isn’t fazed playing against rivals far older and more experienced.
“Some people are four times older or more,” he said.
“They are pretty good to be around actually.
“They are really nice. They don’t have a negative attitude either.”
Scott-Branagan, a student at Asquith High, trains, plays at and represents the club his late grandfather played at on the northern beaches.
“I was three and my pop played and was pretty successful.
“He got me into it,’’ said the teenager who also plays Oz Tag, soccer, rugby and cricket.
“It took me a while to get good.’’
Scott-Branagan said he is looking forward to challenging himself against more experienced rivals in his first ever open tournament at the NSW championships at Ettalong.
The State Championship, Senior State Championships and Presidents Reserve State Championship will all be played at the NSW Central Coast club from this weekend.
