Sound of bouncing basketballs on concrete unbearable, so Mosman councillors want a quieter basketball court at Balmoral

A MOSMAN councillor warns that bouncing basketballs on concrete “make a hell of a lot of noise” as the council explores options for a quieter surface.

MOSMAN Council is exploring options for a “less noisy” basketball court surface at Balmoral Oval.

Councillors agreed on deputy mayor Roy Bendall’s idea about the court in this month’s council meeting, but councillor Libby Moline warned of the noise.

“I think it’s fantastic; I’ve always thought it was a great idea, they have got one at North Sydney, they’re great,” she said.

“But I can tell you what, they make a hell of a lot of noise, that bouncing ball on concrete. It’s like an amphitheatre.

“It’s enough having a skate park clunking and crashing, but those hard basketballs bouncing on the concrete ... seriously, you have no idea the noise that it makes.

“I have grandkids that have one and it nearly drives me mad.”

The council provides four basketball courts in Mosman: one at Allan Border Oval, one at Memory Park and two at Clifton Gardens.

Features include concrete with a post and backboard and three-point line marking for shooting hoops.

The planned Balmoral basketball court would be similar to the Memory Park one.

The council’s spokeswoman said the council was aware of only one basketball noise complaint in recent years and that was some time ago.

Cr Moline suggested quieter surface options.

“I would like to see a mod grass topping on it to soften that noise or that rubber surface,” she said.

“We could have some tests on the mod grass as opposed to that rubber topping, just to see the difference.”

Cr Roy Bendall agreed that “noise attenuation” for the bouncing basketball sound was needed.

“I do understand the noise impact and I don’t want any lights on it because I want the kids to go home,” he said.

“You don’t really need much space for this; just a half one so that the kids can play and train and I think this would be a great addition.”
