Prime Minister Scott Morrison could prove a much-needed benefactor for the North Sydney Olympic Pool redevelopment — after he photographed himself swimming there.
Mr Morrison photographed himself swimming at the harbourside pool on Sunday, and the picture was posted to his Facebook page.
“Great day for a quick swim in Sydney,” Mr Morrison said.
“Twenty laps always clears the head. I try to find time for a swim most days, wherever I am around the country.”
Mr Morrison is believed to have swum at the pool a number of times since moving to Kirribilli House last year.
His familiarity with the venue could help North Sydney Council’s chances of securing the $30 million government funding required for the pool’s redevelopment.
The council has finalised designs for the $57.9 million project, which include an updated 50m pool, an additional pool — being a “family leisure” one, and warm water play area.
A sundeck, cafe and expanded gym would be part of a new grandstand, after engineers found the current one should not be retained.
The venue would also have a 25m indoor pool, warm water pool, spa, sauna and creche.
The council is seeking federal and state government funding.
The council’s general manager Ken Gouldthorp warned the ageing venue could close prematurely if government funding was not forthcoming.
The 50m pool is leaking, and the grandstand has spalling and corrosion.

“We’re time constrained on how long we can keep the doors open,” he said.
“Unless grant funding becomes available, we will need to look at our options.
“No one wants to see North Sydney Olympic Pool close.”
The federal election is due in May, which could be an opportunity for Mr Morrison to pledge funding to the redevelopment.
