The outstanding achievements of residents across Sydney’s north shore have been recognised in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

A total of 32 local champions received the recognition for their extensive work to the community in fields ranging from medicine to volunteer work and sport.

Governor-general David Hurley said the awards placed a spotlight on the contributions of Australians who represent the best of who we are as a nation.

“Recipients share some common traits – including selflessness, excellence and a commitment to service. They’re from different backgrounds, their stories are each unique, and each has served in different ways,” he said.

Among the worthy recipients were South Turramurra couple Carolyn and David Stedman who have provided foster care for 74 children since the 1970s.

“We started fostering back in 1976 and we’ve only just said goodbye to our 74th,” Mrs Steadman said.

“I was in my 20s (when we started fostering) with two children of my own when I heard a radio ad saying there was a critical shortage of foster parents at that time and we felt it was something we were able to do.

“Most of the children we foster are newborns up until the age of two and many come to us with serious health or drug issues and we provide a home for them until they can be returned to their parents or placed in longer-term care.

“Our last little girl had syphilis when she came to us but by the time she was 18-months-old she was bouncing around full of energy.

“It’s rewarding to have that role in their lives.

“I’m only 75 and David is 78 and I think we still have a few more placements in us. I feel we’ve been given a gift to care for children, not everyone would want to do it, but I can’t bear the thought of a child not having a nurturing family and home.”

Killara resident Stephen Ming Liu was also honoured for his significant service to cancer support services and to the community.

His extensive work in the health sector includes serving as chairman and managing fundraising for the CanRevive Cancer Foundation which supports Chinese speaking people in NSW through their cancer journey.

“We’ve raised five million in the last 10 years and that provides support for cancer support services, patients and carers and their families,” he said.

“There can often be a language barrier and a lot of Asian speaking people (when diagnosed with cancer) don’t always know where to turn to or really understand the medical terms so our counsellors help them through their journey.

“Facing cancer is a really dark journey so the idea and the objective of the services is to ensure no one faces the journey alone.”
