A north shore town centre is set to look very different in coming years with plans to turn busy streets into pedestrian zones – sparking a mixed response from local business owners.

An ambitious masterplan for the Kirribilli shopping strip has been released by North Council in a move to revive the town centre and encourage residents and shoppers into the area.

Major features of the project include turning sections of Burton St into new pedestrian zones with outdoor dining areas, extra seating and new trees.

A shared pedestrian plaza would also be created on Bligh St between Humphrey Pl and Broughton St, while the Sydney Harbour lookout would be revived with extra seating, landscaping works, and pathways.

The project would also celebrate the suburb’s synonymity with purple Jacaranda trees with new trees planted around Milsons Point Station.

The underpass under the north shore rail line, which hosts the popular Kirribilli Markets, would also be revamped and painted purple.

Details of the plans has prompted a mixed response from local businesses with some raising concerns over lengthy disruptions from construction works.

San Antonio Sourdough Bakery owner Tony Morgan believes works outside his shop on Burton St should be staged to ensure trade remains stable.

“It would be good in the long run – the area is in need of upgrading – but it would have to be done in winter and not in summer when we’re at our busiest,” he said.

“The job will take a long time – and for businesses that are just coming out of COVID-19 we can’t afford any more disruptions.”

Kirribilli Nails owner Fiona Duignan supported the creation of a pedestrian zone outside her shop, saying the town centre was overdue for upgrading.

“It will definitely benefit the street and assist with the restaurants that are here and I think make the area a lot more inviting,” she said.

Plans show a total of 25 parking spaces on Burton St would be removed for the project, partially offset with 21 new spaces on Upper Ennis Rd.

A total of $500,000 has been budgeted for the first stages of the project.

North Sydney Councillors are due to consider the project at next week’s council meeting including trialling the conversion of Burton and Blight Sts into a pedestrian/shared zones for an initial six month period.
