The State Government has slapped temporary heritage protection on a building at the centre of a controversial development in Neutral Bay.
Plans were at an advanced stage to demolish 6 Hayes St and a neighbouring property to build a unit block.
But the project has been put on ice as Environment and Heritage Minister Gabrielle Upton issued what is known as an interim heritage order (IHO) this morning.
Miles Bastick, the owner of 6 Hayes St, did not wish to comment but neighbour Max Weston from neighbouring 8 Hayes St was taken aback by the decision.
“It is not the end of the road,” Mr Weston said.

“It will delay the determination of the DA pending a full heritage assessment.”
North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson thanked the Minister for placing the order and paid tribute to north shore MP Felicity Wilson for her work on the case.
“Local residents have lobbied council hard to preserve this beautiful home on Hayes St,” Cr Gibson said.
“The home is in excellent condition and has been beautifully preserved.
“As Mayor I will continue to fight to preserve the character of our suburban streets.”
The IHO will allow North Sydney Council to carry out a full assessment of heritage values and decide whether to place the property in its heritage listings.
The Mosman Daily has contacted the developer for comment.
