North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman launched his election campaign tonight with his partner Carlos Toledo by his side.

The couple were joined by leading figures in the Liberal party and supporters at The Deck venue in Luna Park.

During his speech he thanked Mr Toledo for joining him.

“Carlos is Mexican so it’s actually good having someone in the household that comes from a country that’s politics is more turbulent than our own,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“It makes me feel a lot better when I get home and he regales me with stories about his new socialist president.

“But thank you Carlos for everything you do to keep me sane.”

Minister Josh Frydenberg also addressed the crowd.

The couple have been together for several years and live in McMahons Point. Mr Zimmerman was the firstly openly gay member of the House of Representatives and was a strong voice in the campaign for marriage equality in Australia. The launch party is believed to be one of the first official events they have attended together.

At The Deck they were joined by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, North Shore MP Felicity Wilson, North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson and Willoughby Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney. A large crowd of supporters gathered for the event and the couple happily posed for photos after the speeches.

The campaign launch followed an event at North Sydney Olympic Pool where Mr Zimmerman announced $10 million in funding towards a redevelopment project.

During his speech Mr Zimmerman tackled the Labor Party and Bill Shorten — with a warning to the local electorate on taxes.

“He is coming after your money,” Mr Zimmerman said.

Federal Election: Australia's cost of living

“My message to everyone here in North Sydney is that if Bill Shorten is elected leader of this country there is barely a person in this electorate who won’t find the hands of Bill Shorten in their pockets.”
