Neutral Bay sports field branded ‘third world’ in fake turf debate
A Neutral Bay sportsfield has been branded “third world” by a user who has criticised North Sydney Council’s plans not to install synthetic turf.
The Anderson Park community is still at odds over synthetic turf.
North Sydney Council faced a strong community backlash to development plans for the Neutral Bay park and dumped the fake grass project.
It went back to the drawing board and last year released a new plan of management for the treasured green space.
Residents have had their say on the plan with one user calling the current facility “third world”.
“Any plan should include at least one artificial football field as the playing surface is very poor and at times dangerous,” the resident said in a submission.
“The playing facilities are third world … any plan that doesn’t include these measures will be a failure.”
Another neighbour criticised the amount of funds spent on the plan and urged the council just to leave the place alone.
“$150,000 of rate payer money for a 106-page report to paint the sheds green, add a few lights to the path behind Captain Cook Cruisers, reseed the grass, add some fitness equipment?,” the submission said.
“Well the good news is we are not going to have any astro turf.”
North Sydney Council said in its report that the masterplan is “low-intervention” and is designed to not significantly change Anderson Park but to address issues causing community concern.
The main issue at the park is the poor condition of the sports field in winter and there are several proposals to rectify this including upgrading the drainage.
Other ideas for the park include providing cycle racks, installing a basketball shooting hoop, upgrading the cricket net, enhanced lighting and new park furniture.
The Mosman Daily has asked North Sydney Council for further comment.
