MOSMAN has maintained its top 10 status as one of the state’s hot spots for vehicles to break down, according to new data.

The NRMA released figures based on its customers’ roadside assistance calls for the 12 months to the end of September, showing the lower north shore suburb again “achieved” eighth place with 5942 breakdowns.

The most common call-outs in Mosman were for flat batteries, 25 per cent, and problems with wheels and tyres, 13 per cent.

Mosman, a busy thoroughfare for northern beaches residents, had the same ranking when the NRMA previously published breakdown data in April.

To compound Mosman’s traffic woes, the latest quarterly statistics from the Roads and Maritime Services Roads Report show it takes 24.5 minutes to travel from Balgowlah to Cammeray in morning peak hour.

he June to August RMS figures also show the average city-bound speed on the same route, along Manly, Spit and Military roads, is 18.7km/h, or 35 per cent of the speed limit.

The afternoon peak period, outbound from the city, is a slight improvement: it takes 19 minutes to travel the same route at 22.3km/h or 41 per cent of the speed limit.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said it was unsurprising Mosman was a busy area for breakdowns.

“It’s the gateway to the northern beaches and Military Rd is one of the most congested roads in northern Sydney,” he said.

“It’s also the gateway to one of Sydney’s biggest tourist attractions, Taronga Zoo, so, there’s a lot of traffic going through Mosman.”

The data shows holiday destination Port Macquarie is the NSW area with the most breakdowns, 8148, while Randwick rounds out the top 10 with 5111 breakdowns.
