Mosman is the eighth worst location for NRMA customers to breakdown in NSW

NRMA data shows that Mosman’s status as a busy thoroughfare has earned it a top 10 ranking in the list of local government areas for car breakdowns across NSW.

NOT only are Mosman’s Spit and Military roads in gridlock during peak periods but the suburb is also in the top 10 breakdown spots in NSW for NRMA customers.

Mosman earned eighth place, with 3204 breakdowns, in data which the NRMA released this week.

The breakdowns occurred in the 12 months to March.

Popular holiday destination Port Macquarie was the most common local government area for drivers to break down in, with 4902 breakdowns.

Mosman’s status as a major Sydney thoroughfare contributed to its uncomplimentary ranking.

Samantha Taranto, NRMA executive general manager of motoring, said that most of the 3204 vehicles which broke down in Mosman were between five and 12 years old.

“They are not all owned by people in Mosman, though,” she said.

“We know that parts of Mosman like Military Rd are very busy thoroughfares, which is why breakdowns can be particularly inconvenient not just for the motorist, but for those around them as well.

“Generally, about 40 per cent of five-year-old cars which break down do so because of a flat battery.

“We encourage motorists to get their batteries checked often for this very reason; nobody wants to break down in peak hour on Military Rd and cause a traffic jam.”

The NRMA roadside assistance data showed that Port Macquarie, Blacktown and Sydney’s CBD were the top three breakdown locations in NSW in the past 12 months.

Figures showed that cars between four and 15 years made up the significant bulk of calls for help.

The average age of Australia’s vehicle fleet is 10 years.

Cars manufactured in 2005, or that were 12 years old, accounted for the most calls to the NRMA between March 2016 and 2017, with almost 50,000 breakdowns.

This was closely followed by cars manufactured in 2007, 2006, 2003 and 2010, respectively.

More than 14,000 cars manufactured in 2016 required roadside assistance, showing that new cars also broke down regularly.

The most common reasons for breakdowns were: batteries, wheels and tyres, electrical, lockouts, and fuel injection/engine management.

Slow speeds add to traffic woes

The main commuter route between the northern beaches and lower north shore is like a carpark in the morning peak, recording the state’s second slowest average speed.

City-bound vehicles will reach an average speed of 18.6km/h on the Military Rd-Spit Rd-Manly Rd corridor between Balgowlah and Cammeray on a weekday from 6.15am to 9am.

Only Cleveland St, between Darlington and Moore Park, had a slower morning commute with an average speed of 13.5km/h.

The lower north shore run improves marginally in the afternoon peak, when the 21km/h average speed is the 10th slowest in the state out of the 124 key routes measured.

Roads and Maritime Services published the data in a Roads Report last year, using data collected between June 1 and August 31 through mechanisms including traffic light systems, traffic counters and GPS-based vehicles.
