Caring for a loved one can be an isolating experience. The weekly Mosman Carers’ Group is a lifeline for local carers and provides much needed support through a difficult time.

Dinny Reid looks after her husband Bill at home in Mosman. Mr Reid, a retired journalist, has dementia and she finds that the other carers in the group understand what she is going through.

“You don’t feel as isolated when you have something like that to go to,” Mrs Reid said.

“Everyone understands.”

The welcoming group is for people who are caring for a relative or friend who has an illness, dementia or a disability. It is also for carers whose loved one has passed away or moved into residential care. It meets every Wednesday at a room in the Mosman Council chambers and is led by co-ordinator Liz Nagel.

There are weekly guest speakers who provide essential information and the carers also take full day bus outings to give themselves essential time out.

Katica Bosnich’s husband Anton, 92, is now in a nursing home and she still attends the weekly meetings. She cared for him for 21 years after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was unable to care for him full time any longer after she underwent treatment for bowel cancer.

She became lonely as a full time carer and when she discovered the group three and a half years ago it helped her immensely.

“We became friends and share what we were going through. It helped a lot,” Mrs Bosnich said.

“We understand each other.

“It is very good for me. I don’t know what would have happened to me if I didn’t go there.” Mosman Carers’ Group is nominated for the Pride of Australia awards. Nominate a hero today at prideofaustralia.com.au.
