15 PRINCE OF WY, ROYALTY
Mosman has its very own royal family living on leafy Burran Ave. The Prince of Wy, aka Paul Delprat, formed his own micronation in 2004 after a long-running row with Mosman Council over road access. It was a battle he eventually lost but along the way he proved to be an inspiration to everyone to make a stand. Delprat has become a cult celebrity and the Principality of Way has even inspired a manga comic, resulting in regular emails from fans. Alongside his princely duties, Delprat is the principal of the prestigious Julian Ashton Art School.
14 NICOLE KIDMAN AND KEITH URBAN, STAR COUPLE
Hollywood power couples don’t get much more influential than these two. Nicole Kidman grew up on the north shore and in 2009 moved harbourside when she bought into the Latitude building at Milsons Point. We would have put the couple at the top of the list but they are infrequent visitors to their multi-million penthouse. The pair married in a clifftop chapel in Manly and celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary this year. Kidman and Urban also keep homes in New York, LA and Nashville.
13 PHIL KEARNS, FUNDRAISER AND RUGBY ICON
The name Balmoral Burn gives a slight hint of what it’s like to run up Awaba St but year after year thousands of people return to take on the hill. It’s all down to former Wallaby captain Phil Kearns who came up with the idea to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. So far the event has raised millions and bought equipment for hospitals around the country. Kearns also maintains a strong connection with the game he loves as he coaches his children’s rugby teams and is a commentator for Fox Sports.
12 RAY MEAGHER, SOAP LEGEND
What would Palm Beach be without Alf Stewart? The golden sands are synonymous with the character who has been on Home And Away since the pilot show in 1987. Actor Ray Meagher is famous around the world thanks to the soap and his popularity has endured throughout the decades. He won the Logie for Most Popular Actor this year and was recently awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his work in the performing arts. The Milsons Point resident can be regularly spotted in the area but is rarely approached by fans as just like his TV character he’s one of the locals.
11 JAMES SPENCELEY, BUSINESS BRAIN
Quitting school in Year 11 didn’t affect James Spenceley’s fortunes. He founded telecommunications business Vocus and led it to a $25 million listing in 2010. Spenceley now has a net worth of about $45 million. He got his start selling the internet to businesses more than twenty years ago when it was an emerging platform. With an investment portfolio including Airtasker, Marley Spoon and Sustenir, it shows he has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to commerce. We’d love his tip for the next hot technology.
