I want a Ford Mustang for my 60th birthday
A MOSMAN Daily reader is upset that his choice of a 60th birthday new car has been mocked by his Mercedes and Beemer-loving mates.

Dear Val,
It’s my 60th birthday in a few months and I’m planning on giving myself something special — a brand-new car! It’s something I have been planning — and saving for — for nearly two years. It’s a bright red Ford Mustang convertible. It’s a beautiful car but when I showed my friends the brochure, they were aghast, and said my choice was tacky, over-the-top and just not very Mosman. I don’t want to be like everyone else with their Mercs, Range Rovers and Beemers — what should I do?
Young at Heart, Mosman
Dear Young at Heart,
Everyone deserves something special for their birthday, and as it is your 60th it is a very special time for you. You sound very much like a 60-year-old having a 40-year-old male crisis. This is the age commonly known for making a statement one way or another, and seems to be a turning point.
With exquisite creams, advertisements for keeping fit and young, and of course the Hollywood smile, most 60-year-olds look younger, including males who are into Botox jabs and face lifts, not to mention changing their wives — in many instances for a younger model.
I understand your excitement at the thought of buying a new car, but I see your friends in Mosman mostly drive Mercedes, Range Rovers and Beemers.
The new, popular Porsche Macan SUV costs well over $100K and the Mustang Convertible would leave you with plenty of change to fly First Class to wherever, to get that essential tan. That would rub salt into the wounds of your Mosman buddies!
I wonder just how many people in Mosman remember the Red Bikini Girl, who married an iconic real estate man in 1984. She drove a Red Convertible Mercedes with numberplate RED. After splitting with her husband, she went on to be featured as a Penthouse centrefold. She was 18 years old in 1979, so she would be motoring towards 60 as well.
You have been planning and saving for your Mustang for nearly two years, be happy with your decision and just go for it!
