Helicopter delivers trees to Mosman leaving residents stunned

We’ve all been there. You’ve been to Bunnings and can’t get whatever you’ve bought in the car without putting down all the seats down and making the kids walk home. Well, these Mosman residents may have the answer.

Facebook has gone into meltdown over the helicopters at work.

It was a classic only in Mosman moment that got the lower north shore suburb talking.

There’s nothing too unusual about helicopters hovering over Sydney Harbour but when one airlifted trees to a Mosman property it set Facebook alight.

“Only in Mosman would someone barge in very pathetic looking trees then have them helicoptered into yard which is street level,” a neighbour wrote on the Mosman Living page.

The jokes came thick and fast online. Most locals were taken aback by how much it would have possibly cost to hire a helicopter for the job.

“How much is the tree? $3,000. And how much is delivery? $32,000. Sounds great!,” joked Ben Pike.

Sanford Smith joined in with the comment: “I heard they were on the school run to the eastern suburbs.”

The Mosman Daily visited the property in Carrington Ave to find out what was really going on.

The home has only recently been finished and the garden is receiving its finishing touches from The Professional Landscapers company.

A worker on site said seven trees (three natives, two date palms, an olive tree and a frangipani) had been shipped all the way from northern NSW.

Once in Sydney they were transferred to a barge and taken to the property’s private jetty.

A helicopter then lifted each tree into position with the homes on either side having to be evacuated while the chopper did the heavy lifting.

“We have done it before so we know what we are talking about,” the worker said.

“It was a good job.”

He said the helicopter was the only way to get the trees onto the site given restriction from the road.

As well as a powerline outside the front door, he said the narrow road ruled out the use of a crane.

He said a crane on a barge was also not possible due to seagrasses in the bay.

It would also be too far from the house.

It is not known how much the helicopter service cost but the trees themselves cost several thousand each with some weighing over a tonne.

The home, which has only recently been completed, is one of the most beautiful in the area.

Set over six levels it enjoys fantastic views on the water’s edge at Quakers Hat Bay in Mosman.

Mosman councillor Roy Bendall has seen several trees being helicoptered into Mosman homes over the years. He said this is not unusual and can be more cost efficient.

“Often it’s cheaper than a truck and a crane. Helicopters are very efficient; it’s point a to point,” Cr Bendall said.

“A helicopter does it in one go.”
