A CREMORNE author has released the last 100 copies of her children’s picture book celebrating the life of Princess Diana in the lead-up to the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death.
Former television journalist Kay Stammers published Princess Diana — A true fairytale in 1997 after Princess Diana’s death on August 31 that year.
About 20,000 copies were printed in Australia and the United States. Stammers sent a copy to Buckingham Palace for princes William and Harry.
Stammers wrote the book because her son, then aged 7, wondered why “all the adults” were so sad.
“The world stopped 20 years ago: August 31, 1997,” she said.
“Everyone of a certain age can remember what they were doing when they heard the news that Princess Diana was in a fatal car crash in Paris.
“When Princess Diana died we all struggled to understand what had happened.
“But for children, this was so much harder. That same night, I started writing a children’s book.
“I wanted to write in simple terms about who Diana was and the impact she had made, so children could understand why the world was in mourning.”
Stammers sought childhood photographs of the “People’s Princess” from Buckingham Palace and British press agencies to illustrate her book. Some images had never been published before.
“Her life — a fairytale and a tragedy — touched millions of people,” she said.
“This book portrays all the enchantment and magic of Princess Diana’s life, while remaining true to the facts.
“This is a chance to share the special magic of Princess Diana with the children of the world, who played such an important role in her life.
“A factual story in a fairytale setting makes compelling reading for people of all ages.
“Through Diana’s generosity of spirit, she earned her chosen title as queen of our hearts.”
Stammers is also donating copies to school libraries.
The book is available online at princessdianabook.com or in Pages and Pages Booksellers Mosman.
