Children appeal to save trees from poisoning

CHILDREN have launched an appeal in their neighbourhood to save local trees and have pinned signs onto their trunks in a bid to stop any more attacks.

CHILDREN are appealing to a mystery poisoner to leave their trees alone.

Mosman councillor Roy Bendall was taken aback when he spotted handmade signs pinned to trees.

“Please stop poisoning our trees! From all of the kids in our neighbourhood,” the signs read.

The trees are close to scenic Sirius Cove, on the corner of Clanalpine and Kallaroo streets. Cr Bendall said one of the trees, a large liquidambar, was allegedly injected with poison after holes were drilled into the base.

The incident is understood to have happened about three years ago and the tree has a children’s swing on it.

“Good on the children for keeping the pressure on,” Cr Bendall said.

Cr Bendall is calling on the community to be vigilant and keep an eye out for tree vandals.

“On a personal note, this just cannot go on,” Cr Bendall said.

“The problem is values of houses change by up to a million dollars over a view.

“I understand that property owners have a right to maximise value but not when they are killing off public trees ... it ruins the suburb for everyone.”

Cr Bendall said residents believed other trees beside the liquidambar were attacked over winter and became concerned when the leaves fell off and surrounding grass died.

A spokeswoman for Mosman Council said that despite one tree historically being targeted, it appeared this recent leaf drop was a function of nature rather than poisoning.
