PEOPLE who live near Military Rd are hoping they can cope with the “big monster that comes in the night” as another round of works for the B-Line bus route began this week.
Contractors for Transport NSW on Sunday night began a new phase of works to introduce a tidal flow system which would help the bus service, which runs between the city and Mona Vale, move smoothly.
The workers are using jack hammers, saw cutters and other equipment to install cables, traffic signals, fencing and resurface the road.
The works are being carried out along Military Rd between Belmont Rd at Mosman and Ben Boyd Rd at Neutral Bay.
The tidal flow system would have a movable median strip and improve bus reliability, according to the government.
People who live near Military Rd, such as Marshall Phillips, are not looking forward to more night works.
“They park outside my house and you see them carrying signs and things,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s very intense with jackhammers.
“It’s like a big monster that comes in the night. You hear it grumbling and then in the morning there is nothing but muck.”
Transport for NSW had proposed the latest series of works would be carried out five nights per week.
However it revised the frequency to two nights per week after residents voiced their objections.
Motorists have also regained parking and a bus stop on Military Rd, between Winnie St and Cremorne Plaza.
The works’ impact on parking for shoppers has been a concern for traders.
Ulrik Funch runs the U4Hair salon on Military Rd.
He wanted the works done more frequently than two nights per week so the project was finished sooner.
“The quicker they finish it, the better for everybody,” he said.
“Most of my clients perceive that you can’t park, so they go round the corner or up the hill.”
There were others who had stopped coming, according to Mr Funch.
The night works are to continue tonight, and on November 20, 21, 29 and December 2.
A Transport for NSW spokesman said the works at Cremorne were due to be completed in December.
The lane management system would be tested during the April 2019 school holidays, according to the spokesman, before operating.
The works at Neutral Bay are due to be completed in early 2019.
