Ms Steggall convinced dyed-in-the-wool party supporters to change their minds and vote independent.
She took the largest slice of the vote in Neutral Bay East with just over 65 per cent followed by Crows Nest pre-poll and Cremorne.
Zali’s vote was strongest outside Mosman where she mostly polled over the 60 per cent mark. Inside Mosman she averaged at about 56 per cent across the seven booths.
In the last election Mr Abbott won all the lower north shore booths ahead of the Greens, with Balmoral emerging as his most successful booth in Warringah at 70.61 per cent.
There was a notable change in Balmoral this election. It still delivered one of his biggest votes at the weekend at 46.08 per cent but there was a significant slide of almost 25 per cent in support compared to the last election.
Mosman Central, also previously a popular spot for Mr Abbott, took a slide of 28.04 per cent against him.
Ms Steggall narrowly won Mosman pre-poll, where Mr Abbott has his strongest showing at 47.18 per cent.
