BEING “bitten to death by mosquitoes” while waiting to capture a bolt of lightning was worth it for a Balmoral photographer working on his second calendar.
It took Chris Meredith about 1000 frames and a great deal of patience to achieve the perfect image.
“If there’s any dramatic weather I get very excited and grab a camera,” he said.
“This one was very frustrating because every time I shot there was no lightning, but when the shutter closed there was lightning.
“I spent about an hour with a tripod waiting for one where I would actually capture a bolt of lightning.”
The Mosman resident’s 2017 calendar has the same theme as his first in 2015: This Is Balmoral.
“I did not think my shots had that magic, so I prefer to take two years’ worth of photos to give myself the shots I need for the calendar,” he said.
“I’m thrilled with how it’s looking; every month is just a special shot. I just love Balmoral and the calendar is really a celebration of that.”
Meredith spends his mornings taking photos and swimming with friends at Balmoral before he starts his day.
“It’s beautiful; the place attracts people, both swimmers and photographers,” he said.
“As a routine, we go offshore and away from the beach and it becomes our own little private beach.
Meredith said his calendar’s front cover of people on the beach was his favourite photo.
“It says so much about Balmoral,” he said.
“I put a camera on self-timer and hiked it up on a pole, really high, which gave it a slightly new angle.
“It takes a bit of practice because you don’t know exactly when it’s going to go off.”
The 2017 calendar ($20) is for sale through christophermeredith.com.au, Mosman News, Spit Junction News and The Bathers Pavilion Restaurant.
