A Mid-North Coast mother of six “who always had something positive to say” has lost her long battle with cancer leaving her home town in mourning.

Sky Lewis, from the small town of Wingham near Taree, bravely fought breast cancer for more than 10 years.

But at the age of 38 she has succumbed to the illness, leaving behind her husband Luke Lewis and six children Aiden, Curtis, Breanna, Samuel, Haylea-Jade and Charlotte.

The family are well known in town and have strong community ties including their involvement with the Wingham Junior Rugby League Club and Wingham Touch Football Association.

Ron Spriggs, who has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Sky’s funeral, says the entire family were always helping out at games, training and attending committee meetings.

She bravely fought her illness but it kept coming back “and each time Sky would pick herself up and continue the fight,” Ron said after her death on March 21.

“She never took a backward step nor walked away from a fight and yet, despite her illness, always kept her dignity and radiated so much love and care for those around her,” he added.

Her bravery and positive outlook on life has left its mark on all those who knew her including school friend Sharlene Tisdell.

“I remember sometimes when we would see each other and have conversations about some personal stuff, you always had something positive to say to me,” she posted on Facebook.

“You always reminded me that I deserve happiness and to be treated well.

“You always told me I’m a good person and that I was good enough – when I didn’t feel like I was.”

Sky’s funeral will be held on April 4 and in just a few days the GoFundMe campaign to help give her a fitting farewell has raised almost $6000.
