The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A man who died after his vehicle left the road and crashed into a rock wall likely suffered from a medical episode minutes prior to his death.

Police were called to the accident scene at the intersection of Comboyne Rd and Khatabundah St, Wingham, just before 7am on Monday after a Nissan Navara left the roadway and crashed into a rock wall.

Witnesses removed the 45-year-old man from the car and performed CPR before emergency services arrived, but he died at the scene.

Paramedics responded to the incident at Wingham, but could not save the man.

A crime scene was established, and police from Manning/Great Lakes Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Manning/Great Lakes Police District sergeant Matthew Horsington said the nature of the crash was consistent with the man having had medical episode, such as a heart attack, prior to impact.

He said it was very unlikely external factors, such as speed, weather or the condition of the road, had any involvement.

“Due to the nature of the crash and the collision, a medical episode is likely the cause,” he said.

“There is no evidence to suggest anyone else was involved.

“Crime scene investigators have been at the scene documenting the evidence and we’re just waiting for their report.”

A report into the man’s death will be prepared for the coroner.
