A Wingham butcher punched his pregnant partner in the face and when she tried to barricade herself in a bedroom he used a chair to smash a hole in the door and returned brandishing a knife - slashing through the crack.

Valentine Sau was arrested and later remanded in custody after police were alerted by concerned neighbours who heard screaming and crashing around 4am on November 5 at a Wingham address.

Sau appeared before Magistrate Allison Hawkins on Monday via audiovisual link when he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalk and intimidate and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

According to police documents, Sau is in Australia on a working visa and has been working at Wingham Beef Exports for the past 11 months and was in an intimate relationship with a woman for several months and they are expecting a child together.

In the early hours of November 5 Sau was lying in bed with his partner and talking about fighting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.

This sparked a disagreement between the two and Sau punched his partner in the face above the left eye and walked out of the bedroom.

The victim then barricaded herself in the room placing a suitcase up against the door, but Sau returned and swung a chair at the door, cracking it open - later returning with a kitchen knife waving it through the crack towards the victim in a slashing motion saying “I’m going to kill you”.

Sau walked back to the kitchen and grabbed two larger knives about 18cm long, holding one in each hand.

Police arrived about 4.30am, alerted by concerned neighbours, and found Sau holding the knives and staggering towards police.

Officers used a taser to subdue him and according to their records, he was foaming at the mouth and sobbing uncontrollably and admitted he had been drinking.

Ms Hawkins denied bail and adjourned the matter to December 18 for sentencing.
