Well-known Port Macquarie motorbike rider Peter Ford is in the fight of his life after being hit by a car while riding home from work.

His wife Emma Jenkins was expecting him home from his shift at the BP service station on the Port Macquarie highway exit shortly after 6pm on Wednesday, July 10.

“I was calling and calling – then an ambulance officer answered and said he was in hospital – I was totally shocked,” she said.

Mr Ford, 29, was rushed to hospital suffering broken bones in his legs, cracked ribs and serious cuts, but as Ms Jenkins explained, it’s the potential brain injury that has had her most worried.

She said: “He has post-traumatic amnesia and doesn’t remember anything about the accident and keeps asking ‘what happened?’.”

Ms Jenkins said she did not know if the situation would improve and that Mr Ford has been transferred to Wauchope Hospital for further rehabilitation.

“He remembers who we are and things like that, but he can’t remember if we’ve already visited that day,” Ms Jenkins explained.

The couple’s three-year-old son Liam has been struggling to understand the situation and has been asking where Daddy is all the time.

A NSW Police spokesperson said local police were called to Lake Rd about 6.30pm and found an SUV and Mr Ford’s motorcycle had collided.

“The rider was thrown from the bike,” the spokesperson said.

“The female driver of the SUV underwent a roadside breath test and returned a negative result.”

Ms Jenkins said her husband was very well-known in the Port Macquarie area after working as a traffic controller and in various retail roles.

“Wherever we go people are always saying hello to him,” she said.

“He’s made lots of connections with everyone in the community and is very well respected.”

Ms Jenkins said she was extremely grateful to those who have already contributed to a GoFundMe campaign she set up to help pay for soaring medical bills.

As a casual worker, Mr Ford has no leave entitlements. He is the main breadwinner in the family.

“We are struggling to make ends meet and the mounting medical bills only add to our worries,” Ms Jenkins said.

“Peter is not just a husband, he is the heart and soul of our family.

“His infectious laugh, unwavering support, and boundless love are irreplaceable and seeing him in pain, unable to provide for us, is heartbreaking.”

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing on Wednesday, the police spokesperson confirmed.
