Two men left badly injured after they were tossed into the ocean on the Mid-North Coast and run over by their boat spent 90 minutes struggling back to shore – one with two broken legs.
Wayne Davis and Shane Myers are lucky to be alive after being swept overboard by a wave near Queens Head between Port Macquarie and Crescent Head late in the afternoon of August 1.
Their boat and its propeller ran over them at speed and they struggled back to shore.
When they finally made it to Back Beach near Point Plomer, a passer-by called paramedics and the men were treated at the scene, before being flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital.
Wayne suffered severe lacerations to his abdomen and other deep cuts. He has undergone two surgeries, including skin grafting.
Shane survived with two broken legs and substantial cuts. He has undergone three surgeries in which skin grafts were completed and metal pins and rods were placed in his legs.
The pair face more surgeries and a long road to recovery, both physically and mentally.
Samantha Henshaw has organised a GoFundMe campaign to help support the men and their families.
She estimated they will not be able to return to work for at least six months.
“The Davis and Myers Families are proud, hardworking contributors to our community,” she wrote.
“They would never ask for help, however, it is well known that they would be first to assist anyone in need.
“It is for this reason that it is a priority that we ensure that we ease the growing financial burden to allow them to focus on their recoveries with their loving families at their side.”
