Woman injured after crashed SUV hit by passing truck on Pacific Hwy at Coopernook, near Taree

Two people freed themselves after an SUV spun out and crashed on the highway near Taree – but one woman was still inside when a truck slammed into the wreckage. Here’s what we know.

Two people freed themselves after an SUV spun out of control and crashed on the highway near Taree – but one woman was still inside when a truck crashed into the wreckage.

Officers from the Manning Great Lakes Police District were called to the Pacific Highway at Coopernook about 8.20pm on Thursday.

Officers were told three people had been travelling south in the SUV – towing a trailer carrying a car – when it struck a guard rail. The SUV spun out and ended up facing north.

The driver and front-seat passenger had left the SUV when it was struck by a southbound truck, seriously injuring a woman in her 50s still in the back seat.

She was treated on scene by paramedics for multiple injuries, before being transported to Taree airport to meet the Westpac Rescue Helicopter’s critical care medical team.
The woman was stabilised further before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

After colliding with the car the truck then continued down an embankment.

The driver of the SUV and his front-seat passenger escaped injury. He was taken to Taree Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

Pacific Highway southbound lanes were closed for more than two hours while the scene was examined and the wreckage removed.
