A critical incident investigation is under way after police shot an allegedly armed man dead during a confrontation in the carpark of a country NSW hospital.

A critical incident investigation is under way after police shot an allegedly armed man dead in the carpark of a country hospital.

NSW Police said in a statement they had “engaged” with a man in the carpark of the Manning Base Hospital, in Taree, about 12.55pm on Thursday.

“During the engagement, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police,” the statement said.

“Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“The man – believed to be aged in his 30s – was taken into the Manning Base Hospital where he died a short time later.”

Police said no officers or other people had been physically injured.

The confrontation occurred 35 minutes after police had been called to Summerville Street at Wingham, following a concern for welfare.

Five minutes later, officers received several reports that a man had fired shots into the air on Rouse St at Wingham.

Manning-Great Lakes police attended and commenced a search before the confrontation at the Taree hospital, about 13km away.

A critical incident investigation team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
