A two-storey home on the Manning River in Taree was totally engulfed in flames on Saturday afternoon.
Power was cut to nearby homes and firefighters desperately tried to save a neighbouring property with the intense flames being fanned by strong winds.
A Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) spokesperson said they were called to the River Street home just after 5.15pm and when firefighters arrived the large older style home was totally engulfed in flames.
The spokesperson said there were about twenty FRNSW firefighters on scene being assisted by Rural Fire Service volunteer firefighters.
Bystanders said the flames appeared to be coming from the second storey.
The home has been boarded up for several months now with smashed windows and graffiti on the walls.
Around 8.30pm on Saturday evening a FRNSW spokesperson said firefighters were still on scene putting out ‘hot spots’ from outside the home.
“It was such a severe fire that we’re not sending firefighters inside the home so it will take longer to extinguish it completely.”
Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Police will return to the scene on Sunday to determine the cause of the fire
