Rodney Clayton in Taree court charged with cruelty to horse near Wingham

It’s alleged a Mid-North Coast man failed to care for a horse, resulting in it being in “such a physical condition it was cruel to keep it alive”.

A brown thoroughbred mare was allegedly neglected at a property on the Mid-North Coast to such an extent it was “cruel to keep it alive”, a court has heard.

The NSW Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is pursuing a case against Rodney Clayton from Wallaby Joe Rd, northwest of Taree, near the small town of Wingham.

Clayton has pleaded not guilty to the charge of committing an act of cruelty upon an animal.

The 58-year-old man is alleged to have failed to provide the necessary vet treatment for a large chronic wound and poor body condition between April 7 and November 30 last year.

The NSW RSCPA would not comment as the case is still before the courts.

The matter has been adjourned to July 25.
