Port Macquarie’s Settlement City evacuated, emergency services arrive after gas leak

Approximately 400 people were evacuated by security after a supermarket gas leak in Settlement City on Wednesday.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from a popular Port Macquarie mall during the busy lunchtime peak today after a gas leak was detected in one of the stores.

Emergency services were called to Settlement City just after 1pm, with specialist firefighters from the NSW Fire and Rescue HAZMAT unit joining police and paramedics at the Park Street scene.

The leak was traced to a faulty refrigeration unit in the deli section of a Woolworths supermarket.

HAZMAT officers in protective gear entered the mall and used gas detection monitors to determine the gas levels throughout the property.

Settlement City was ventilated and a mechanic brought in to fix the leak.

Staff and shoppers were allowed to re-enter the building once levels returned to normal.

No injuries were reported.
