There were tense scenes on the Pacific Highway near Taree as a woman wielding a large blade terrorised motorists and became involved in a confrontation with police.
Emergency services including Manning/Great Lakes Police District officers were called to a rest stop just south of the regional city about 4pm this afternoon.
Police found a woman standing in the middle of the road armed with the blade, believed to be a machete, threatening drivers and disrupting traffic.
Officers blocked the northbound lanes of the highway and negotiated with the woman, who allegedly threatened officers, according to a statement.
Police tasered the woman, she was tackled to the ground and the blade was seized.
Officers took a 52-year-old woman to Taree Police Station and she was “assisting police with inquiries” on Tuesday night.
Videos of the incident have been posted to social media.
Police investigations continue.
