A 58-year-old security guard who police have charged with attempts to procure a 14-year-old for sex, has only just left hospital more than two months after he was beaten in custody at the Mid-North Coast Correctional Centre, court documents reveal.

Mikhail Robert Gordon, 58, was arrested by detectives at a beach in Port Macquarie on October 7 last year, after they allege he was speaking with someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl and engaged in conversations about sexually explicit acts he wished to perform on her.

Strike Force Trawler detectives allege Mr Gordon, a grocery store security guard, made arrangements to meet the fictitious girl for sex.

He was charged with using a carriage service to procure a child under 16 years for sexual activity, use a carriage service to solicit child abuse material and possess/control child abuse material using carriage service.

The 58-year-old was due to appear in Port Macquarie Court on Thursday, however defence lawyer Isaac Morrison informed Magistrate Georgina Darcy that his client was unfit to do so as he had recently been receiving treatment in hospital.

The Mid-North Coast News can reveal that medical records and a letter tendered in court documents show that Mr Gordon was seriously assaulted while in custody at the Mid-North Coast Correctional Centre on June 5.

A clinical diagnosis report shows Mr Gordon suffered a punch to the back of his head, which then hit a steel wall. The triage report states that he was knocked unconscious had no movement to his right arm.

He was located by guards who were assisted by other prisoners. The records stated that he required ‘urgent’ transfer to Royal North Shore Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The court heard on Thursday that he has since left the facility and is now back in custody at Long Bay Jail in Sydney.

Mr Morrison wrote to the court in July, requesting an adjournment to the August 5 date due to the fact Mr Gordon was unfit to appear.

“On 5 June 2021, Mr Gordon was assaulted in custody,” The letter tendered in court on documents stated.

“He was punched in the back of the head, the front of his head struck a metal door and he was rendered unconscious. He was diagnosed with a fracture to his C2 vertebra and suffered numbness and reduced movement down the right side of his body.

“I have been advised by Corrective Services that Mr Gordon is currently still receiving medical treatment at an outside hospital and is unable to appear at court or attend any professional legal visits.”

The Mid-North Coast News understands the assault was committed by another inmate, who is currently before the courts.

Mr Gordon will reappear at Port Macquarie Local Court for committal on September 23.
