Police have revealed more details about what they encountered at the Mid-North Coast motorbike crash site where the bodies of two men in their 20s - who had been missing for more than a week - were found.

A NSW Police spokesperson has confirmed that a nearby resident, and not a passing motorist, found the bodies and alerted authorities but have refused to say if the bike involved was stolen.

Officers located the bodies of Taree men Herbert Morcombe 21, and Jadison Ridgeway, 20, near a crashed motorbike on Harrington Rd about 11 kilometres away from the town of Harrington about 9am on Monday.

The young men were last seen leaving a home on Dunoon St, Taree about 3.30am on Friday, August 16.

Manning Great Lakes Police District officers were notified the pair had gone missing about midday on Tuesday, August 20 and an investigation was launched.

On the afternoon of Thursday, August 22, NSW Police called for help from the public.

Family were worried and the disappearance of the men was described by police as out of character.

Police were asked on Tuesday whether officers were investigating any suspicious circumstances. It comes amid a raft of suggestions on social media that the men were the victims of foul play or otherwise murky circumstances.

A NSW Police spokesman did not directly answer questions, but said that when officers arrived at the crash site not far from the Pacific Highway exit, it appeared the motorbike had lost control on a corner and smashed into trees.

“While the investigation is ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner, initial inquiries suggest that the motorbike left the roadway on a sharp bend before crashing heavily into trees,” the spokesman said.

NSW Police have also been asked about speculation the pair may have been riding a stolen motorbike.

“We are unable to provide further details as the matter is before the coroner,” the spokesman said.

Officers found the bodies not far from the crashed motorcycle.

Family and friends of the men have begun taking to social media sites including Facebook to express their grief and offer condolences.

One woman wrote that her “heart goes out to our Taree mob and to extended families” in the wake of the “great loss”. She called on the community to come together.

“ … may the brothers rest in the Dreamtime,” one man wrote as he paid respects.

“Condolences to all the families. As they leave this plain and take their place in the Dreamtime with their ancestors, they will always walk together. Rest easy young warriors,” another woman wrote.
