After years of push back from locals and council, a Sydney developer’s plans for a luxury development have been approved in a mellow Mid-North Coast town he says has “huge potential”.
The project – comprising 17 three-storey townhouses all featuring their own pool – along Forest Rd at Nambucca Heads was recently approved by Nambucca Shire Council.
Sydney-based developer Oscar Design and Construction went back to the drawing board on several occasions over the years in relation to plans for the steep block near the CBD.
Director Greg Elhen said he “fell in love” with the quiet coastal town with “huge potential” many years ago.
“It’s going to be the next Coffs Harbour. You’ve got the rainforests and beaches - and no tolls,” Mr Elhen said.
“You can raise a family here with plenty of nice schools around.”
In September 2022, council rejected the company’s original proposal for apartment blocks housing 24 three-bedroom units.
Residents opposed to the concept formed the Forest Road Action Group (FRAG).
Mr Elhen said at the time the “area wasn’t ready” for the development, but attitudes had changed with its recent approval.
Some of the townhomes will feature ocean views and Mr Elhen anticipates construction will commence in the New Year.
“It’s only 400 metres from the CBD with forest frontage so you’ll have a combination of forest and ocean breezes,” he said.
The project is expected to take 15 months to build and the developer aims to employ local contractors.
