FoodWorks, Crescent Head: Plans for supermarket expansion on Rankine St approved

FoodWorks Crescent Head has been given the green light for a major expansion.
Kempsey Shire Council has approved the expansion of the Rankine St supermarket which will see it take over the neighbouring site that once operated as a Mexican restaurant, Chanchitas.
The expansion will give the grocery store a total floor space of 238.71 sqm.
Works will include the installation of new shelving bays, express checkout counters, produce cool rooms, grab n go fridges, timber produce bins, benches, display tables, auto bi-parting doors, shopfront framing, and tiered racks.
“The development application will expand and continue the operation of the existing shop/supermarket,” Eagle Urban outlined on behalf of Jake Johnston Building Design.
“The supermarket will continue to provide a range of fresh food and daily items for the convenience of residents, workers, and visitors to the area.
“Goods stocked within the store shall include a selected range of fresh produce and the necessities such as bread, milk, and other general grocery items.”
The plans also include an internal fit-out for the shop, including changes to the existing tenancies to ensure the revamped FoodWorks is equipped with a trading floor, produce area, services area, separate produce coolers and stockrooms, and back of house area with storeroom and staff office.
The double brick wall separating the stores will be removed, while new internal walls will be constructed to create space for cool rooms, storage rooms and the office space.
FoodWorks’ entry/exit points will also be changed with the existing doors on Scott and Rankine streets to be permanently closed and automatic doors to be installed further east of Rankine St.
“Three long produce shelves will break up most of the retail space and provide space to stock products for sale,” Eagle Urban stated.
“The retail counter will be provided at the eastern end of the supermarket … adjacent to the new entry/exit point into the supermarket.”
No changes are proposed to the grocery store’s current operating times and additional parking is not planned.
“The development does not create additional pressure or need for parking that has not been previously considered under past approval over the site,” the planner noted.
“The proposed development is consistent with the objectives of the zone by way of retaining and improving the existing retail services that serve the needs of the people who live, work, and visit the Crescent Head area.”
