A man is in custody, awaiting likely extradition from Queensland, after he allegedly crashed while trying to avoid road spikes during a police chase late last week on the NSW Mid-North Coast.
The 39-year-old man was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital with head and spinal injuries last Friday, following the incident near Crescent Head.
NSW Police initially declared a critical incident but, on Monday afternoon, revealed this had been downgraded following an update on the man’s condition.
While the 39-year-old has been released from hospital, he remains in custody in Queensland as NSW Police make arrangements to apply for his extradition.
Police previously said officers from the Mid North Coast Police District and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command had responded, about 1.10pm last Friday, to reports of a white Nissan 4WD, with a trailer attached, driving erratically around Crescent Head.
Police attempted to stop the driver, but he allegedly failed to do so.
A short time later, the vehicle was seen travelling from Maria River Rd onto Crescent Head Rd.
The vehicle headed towards South Kempsey, where police received approval to deploy road spikes.
The driver allegedly attempted to avoid the road spikes and lost control, crashing and rolling.
