A series of homes and businesses could be knocked down to make way for an 11-storey high-rise in the heart of Tuncurry, according to a newly submitted development application.

The development, located on a massive 5040sq m block on the town’s main road, is looking to secure four separate allotments for a mixed-use commercial plaza and residential unit building.

The land is currently home to a block of flats and a motel with a now-closed restaurant and bar, while other sections of the block are vacant.

“(The proposed building) will comprise (of) common basement carparking area; ground floor commercial, retail and carparking areas; thirty-six residential units contained within ten levels above the ground floor level; landscaped plaza/communal use area in the central portion of the land,” a planner for the project said.

“The subject site has four separate road frontages being Kent Street which adjoins the subject site to the north, Manning Street which is present along the eastern boundary of the subject site, Manning Ln which adjoins the subject site to the west and Catherine St which adjoins the subject site to the south.”

The proposal points to other development applications in the area, including the central and southern sections of the block which have been approved for a nine-storey mixed-use building, and the western portion which has approved a seven-storey residential flat.

“The proposed development has therefore been designed so as to respond to the desired character of the locality, as provided for by council’s development standards.”

While the site is not considered to be in danger of landslips or bushfires, the plans address the potential of flooding.

Tuncurry locals have less than a month to submit their feedback on the proposal, with the exhibition period ending Monday, September 12.
