Bailey Evans: Lake Cathie man accused of breaking and entering 19 businesses

Police allege 22-year-old Bailey Evans broke and entered 19 businesses during a two-month crime spree across the Port Macquarie-Hastings this year.

A 22-year-old man has been refused bail for allegedly breaking and entering 19 Port Macquarie businesses between October and December this year.

Bailey Evans, of Lake Cathie, appeared before Magistrate Georgina Darcy on Friday, accused of committing 22 break and enters on Port Macquarie businesses between October 22 and December 8, 2020.

The court heard that police executed a search warrant of Mr Evans’ property after his DNA, being blood, was allegedly found at a crime scene.

Clothes belonging to Mr Evans, that were later located at his residence, were also allegedly linked to the crimes.

An application for bail on the basis of mental health, was refused.

The 22-year-old is still yet to enter a plea.

“The allegations are that between 21st of October right up until the 7th of December, Mr Evans undertook a number of break and enters around the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area,” Magistrate Darcy said.

“It would appear to be a strong circumstantial case, given that there are a number of items of clothes that were found at the premises where he was residing.

“Mr Evans‘ DNA was also detected at one of the break and enters, being blood that was found on the floor beneath the cash register matching that of Mr Evans.

“There is a reasonably strong case against Mr Evans.“

Police have charged Mr Evans with 23 offences, the bulk of which relate to break and enter offences throughout Port Macquarie. There is one further charge relating to drug possession.

Police allege that Mr Evans’ offending began on October 21 where he is accused of breaking and entering the Hill Cafe at Thrumster and stealing $600.

A second business, the Your Discount Chemist, located in the same vicinity was also alleged to have been broken into.

It is here police allege Mr Evans stole a further $300.

Police also allege Mr Evans, while in the company of another person, broke into the Port Macquarie Golf Club on November 11 and stole $3000.

Two weeks later on November 20, it is alleged Mr Evans then broke into the Beantree Cafe, where it is alleged he stole a silver Apple Macbook Pro Laptop, a cash register and a tips jar.

Four days later, the alleged crime spree then turned to Laurieton, where on November 24 police allege he broke into a seafood business, and in the company of another person, allegedly stole $50.

A sum of $400 was then allegedly taken from the Fat Fish Cafe at Bonny Hills on the same day.

Two days later on November 26, police allege he then targeted the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre where he is accused of stealing $850.

He then allegedly made his way over to the Lake Innes Shopping Village, where Charlie’s Chicken Takeaway, the Country Nails and Ruins Cafe were all broken into.

Between December 2 and 3, police allege Mr Evans then broke into the BP on Ocean Dr, the Emerald Downs Golf Club and the Tacking Point Tavern followed by a number of businesses in the Waniora Village.

He is accused of break, entering and stealing from the Four Seasons Chinese restaurant and the Shelley Beach Pharmacy where he allegedly stole $1000 and two boxes of Viagra.

Several businesses at Waniora Village, including Waniora Hair and Beauty, the Waniora Village Butchery and catering company Katecaters were also allegedly targeted.

Police allege Mr Evans stole $480, an antique gold necklace, plain gold ring with diamond, another ring with a diamond and sapphire, a small handbag and some prescription drugs from Katecaters.

The last premises police allege Mr Evans broke into was Lakeside Bargains at Lake Cathie.

He is also facing one charge of possession of a prohibited drug, being .31 grams of Ketamine.

A further application for bail will be heard at Port Macquarie Local Court on Thursday.
