A man accused of stealing a car and leading police on a wild pursuit down a stretch of Mid-North Coast highway before swerving onto a railroad and ramming a cop car has faced court.
Alexander Peattie, 23, has been arrested and hit with a string of charges in relation to the alleged pursuit, including driving recklessly.
He has been denied bail and will next appear in Kempsey Local Court on Thursday.
About 8am on Friday, officers attached to the Mid-North Coast Highway Patrol detected an allegedly stolen Toyota utility travelling north on the Pacific Hwy at Kundabung at high speed.
Police tried to stop the vehicle but when it allegedly failed to do so, a pursuit was initiated but later terminated due to safety concerns.
A short time later, the vehicle was again seen travelling north on the Pacific Hwy near Collombatti, where it left the roadway and drove along the railway corridor.
The allegedly stolen car then travelled north along the railway lines for approximately 5km until it turned onto Browns Crossing Rd, then back onto the highway at Warrell Creek, where it eventually came to a stop after road spikes were deployed.
During the incident, an unmarked police car was allegedly rammed before the stolen car was stopped.
No police were injured during the incident.
Peattie was taken to Kempsey Police Station where he was charged with a laundry list of offences including speeding more than 45km/h over the limit; using an offensive weapon to prevent detention; not stopping while pursued by police; receiving property stolen outside NSW and driving recklessly.
