Gym-goers will no longer be required to wear masks during group training sessions, after NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard made amendments to the public health orders.

It is understood fitness fans returning the gym after lockdowns raised concerns over the requirement for masks during strenuous group training sessions.

Sports Minister Natalie Ward commended the move by Mr Hazzard.

“This is another great step forward for fully vaccinated gym lovers, as restrictions continue to ease in NSW,” she told NewsLocal.

“It’s important people are able to exercise in as much comfort as possible, so I’m really pleased it will no longer be a requirement for masks to be worn during an indoor gym or dance class.”

Masks will still be required to be worn in other indoor areas of a gym, such as reception and change rooms.

Gyms that are open to members of the public must have a COVID-19 Safety Plan.

Cristian Cordova from True Exercise Science said the changes to the mask rules meant they can help their clients “reach their true potential during workouts” and help them get back to their pre-lockdown bodies.

“Group training sessions provide a safe and fun environment that improves not only physical wellbeing, but their mental health and confidence,” Mr Cordova said.
