A popular boat share company based on Pittwater has been revealed as the owner of a luxury yacht that ran aground on a remote Central Coast beach a fortnight ago.
The 40-foot Hanse became an unlikely tourist attraction for bushwalkers passing by Maitland Bay after high winds and a big swell pushed it on to the picturesque beach on October 8.
Social media posts suggested the yacht, which is managed by SMART Boating at Bayview, had broken from its mooring on the northern beaches and drifted north into the bay.
But the German-built vessel had actually been anchored in Maitland Bay, with one adult as skipper, and four teenagers on-board, before an early southerly hit the area.
The skipper is part of a syndicate of 10 boaties who have shares in the yacht. The syndicate is managed by SMART Boating, which moors yachts at the Bayview Anchorage Marina.
A Broken Bay Water Police spokesman said the group had been swimming at the secluded bay when a sudden southerly whipped up.
He said the winds and swell pushed the vessel onto a sandbank where it became stranded. No one was injured.
“The party involved were walked out of the beach where they were met by local police at the top of the Maitland Bay Track before they were taken to Woy Woy Police Station where further travel arrangements were made.”
The boat suffered minor damage to its rudder and was refloated after being pulled from the beach by a motor vessel on Tuesday last week.
It is now back at the Bayview marina.
SMART Boating Group co-owner Martin Lyall told the Manly Daily in a statement: “I would like to thank both the Water Police, who attended the scene, and Marine Rescue for their efforts and I am thankful that nobody on-board was hurt during the incident.”
