WORK will start in February to improve a deadly stretch of Mona Vale Rd.

Pittwater MP Rob Stokes announced on Friday Georgiou Group was the successful tenderer to undertake roadworks worth $140 million on Mona Vale Rd East.

The steep hill on Mona Vale Rd, coming from Ingleside, has been the scene of two fatal truck crashes.

In 1998 father of four Silverio Garcia was killed when a truck hit his car.

His car was then pushed into a house, killing 13-year-old Nicole Everson.

And in 2013 two people died when a petrol tanker burst into flames near Samuel St.

“This is a huge win for our community,” Mr Stokes said.

“This upgrade has been talked about for decades, so to now have it fully funded and ready to go is fantastic.

“The key focus of this project is making this notorious stretch of road safer for our community.

“An enormous amount of work has been completed over recent years to get to this point, including geotechnical assessments, property acquisitions and detailed road design.”

The roadworks — between Foley St at Mona Vale and Manor Rd at Ingleside — will involve building additional climbing and descending lanes to improve travel times and the introduction of median separation.

A heavy vehicle arrester bed — a safety bay filled with soft sand and gravel to slow down out-of-control trucks — will be constructed at the steepest point of Mona Vale Rd.

The upgrade will widen the road to four lanes over the 3.2km stretch.

Work is expected to be completed in 2022.

Detailed road design works are continuing for Mona Vale Rd West, between Powder Works Rd at Ingleside and McCarrs Creek Road at Terrey Hills.

Major improvements to the intersection of Mona Vale Rd and Forest Way at Terrey Hills have recently been completed to assist travel flow, particularly during the morning peak.

“As with all major projects, funding is always an issue and that’s why it was so important we secured the necessary funds in last year’s State Budget,” Mr Stokes said.

Mr Stokes said this would not facilitate any new development and instead the upgrades were “purely about safety and easing pre-existing congestion”.

Georgiou Group is a construction company with 40 years experience, with 46 projects now under way.

The group was announced as the winner of a $25 million tender for the design and construction of an ancillary works package including road and building construction for the Sydney Metro.
