POLICE investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a wheelie bin at the back of a unit complex in Freshwater are not treating the death as suspicious.
A resident found the deceased woman after seeing legs sticking out of a Northern Beaches Council domestic garbage bin at the apartments in Wyndora Ave just before 1.30pm on Wednesday.
Homicide detectives were advised of the grim find, but indications suggest the death may have been due to misadventure or as the result of a medical episode.
It is understood the woman, aged in her mid-60s and who lived alone in the unit block, may have toppled into the bin while trying to put rubbish into it.
A pair of sunglasses was found on top of low wall, close to the bin.
A neighbour, who spoke to the Manly Daily, said she was told that another female resident looked in the bin yesterday after “noticing something unusual” and saw legs sticking out. She immediately called police.
Today police said inquiries into the circumstances of the woman’s death were continuing.
“Police are waiting on the results of a post mortem, but the death is no longer being treated as suspicious,” a spokesman said.
Northern Beaches detectives and forensic technicians spent five hours combing over the driveway and a bin storage area at the two-storey apartment block.
Police would not speculate on how long the woman had been in the bin.
A distressed woman arrived at the crime scene at about 4pm and was taken aside and spoken to by detectives before leaving about 45 minutes later while being comforted by friends.
Neighbour Mary-Louise Parkinson said many of the 10 units in the complex were occupied by older woman who live on their own.
“It’s very shocking and terrible,” Ms Parkinson said.
At 5.30pm on Wednesday police loaded a wheelie bin into the rear of a police van.
