AUSSIE’S love a punt and Anzac Day is one day where the game of Two-Up is legally played in pubs and clubs.
The punter stereotype traces its origins back to Two-Up, an Australian gambling game extremely popular among Diggers during World War I.
Gamblers would cluster around a “spinner”, who tossed two pennies into the air, with players betting on whether the coins would fall with both heads facing up, both tails up, or with one coin a head and one a tail (known as “odds”).
It is now traditionally played on Anzac Day in pubs and clubs across Australia, the only day when it is legal everywhere.
Players bet on the combinations of how coins fall.
The design of pre-1939 pennies had the king or queen’s head on the front and writing on the back, making a result easy to see.
Today, it is common for a coloured cross to be painted onto the tail coin to accentuate the difference.
Old pennies are often still seen on Anzac Day, brought out specifically each year.
Some spinners have an elaborate ritual, bending low before flipping the coins with a flick of the wrist.
The coins must fly at least 3m into the air, may not hit the roof or light fittings, and have to fall within the ring to be a legitimate throw.
If one or more falls out of it, the “ringie” declares the game void and the “spinner” takes another throw.
The spinner tosses until they lose their bet or throw five consecutive odds.
TWO-UP LINGO
Spinner: Tosses coins.
Boxer: Manages game and betting. Cannot bet.
Ring: Circle for game.
Kip: Flat paddle of wood about 20cm long. Coins are placed on before toss — one with head facing up, the other with tail up.
Heads: Both coins land inside ring with heads up.
Tails: Both coins land with tails facing up.
Odds: One coin shows a head and the other a tail.
Odding Out: Spinning five “odds” in a row, ending spinner’s run.
Come in Spinner: Call given by boxer after all bets have been placed and spinner can toss.
Cockatoo: Lookout who watched for police when two-up was still illegal
