Tony Abbott challenger Zali Steggall can count on another vote in the form of entertainer and former Warringah candidate James Mathison.
The 41-year-old, who took 11.4 per cent of the primary vote when standing against Abbott in 2016, said he was impressed by her warmth, honesty and character.
“We’ve been taken for granted for too long here. In Zali we have someone who will genuinely listen to the community rather than just governing according to their own beliefs. That is what Tony has been doing,” he said.
Asked what his advice would be for Ms Steggall, he said: “Well I don’t think she needs my advice but I would say that it is important she remains positive.
“Politics can be very negative and it can get a bit feisty at times.
“But I think in Warringah we are just looking for a positive message.”
Despite Mr Abbott having held the seat since 1994, Mr Mathison said Ms Steggall had a real chance of success.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen the mood this ready for change before,” he said.
